## Overview

Reap has two kinds of motion for video segments:

* **Enter and exit animations** play on a single segment as it starts or ends. See [How to Add Transitions](/help-center/how-to-add-transitions-to-your-clips).
* **Transitions between clips** play across the cut where one video segment ends and the next begins. This guide covers this kind.

## Before You Start

A cut transition needs two video segments that sit right next to each other on the timeline. If your clip is one continuous segment, split it first: move the playhead to where you want the cut and click **Cut** in the timeline toolbar, or press **⌥S** (Alt+S on Windows).

## Step-By-Step Workflow

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open your clip in the editor">
    Click **Edit** under the clip.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Add transition">
    On the timeline, click **Add transition** at the cut between the two video segments. The **Transition** panel opens on the right.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a transition">
    Pick a transition type: **None**, **Fade**, **Slide**, **Wipe**, **Iris**, **Clock**, **Zoom**, or **Blur**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the details">
    * **Sound**: pick a sound effect to play with the transition, or leave it on **None**.
    * Depending on the type, you can also set the **Duration** and the **Direction**, for example for **Slide** and **Wipe**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Preview and export">
    Play across the cut to check it, then click **Export**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Troubleshooting

**"These clips are no longer next to each other"**: you moved one of the segments, so there's no shared cut to put a transition on. Move the segments back together on the timeline, or pick another cut.

## Tips

* Short transitions (well under a second) feel natural in short-form video. Longer ones can slow the pace.
* Use one transition style throughout a clip for a consistent look.
* To change or remove a transition, open it again from the cut and choose another type or **None**.
