# How to Add a Custom Thumbnail

> Upload an image and set it as your clip's thumbnail from the Thumbnail panel in the editor.

## Overview

A custom thumbnail is the image people see before your clip plays. Use the **Thumbnail** panel in the editor to upload an image and set it on your clip. Reap places the thumbnail at the very start of the clip.

## Add A Thumbnail

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Thumbnail panel">
    In the editor, click **Thumbnail** in the right sidebar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Upload an image">
    Click **Upload** and choose an image from your computer. It's saved under **Thumbnails** so you can reuse it on other clips.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the thumbnail">
    Click the image you want to use. Reap adds it to the start of your clip and jumps the playhead to the first frame so you can see it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Adjust it">
    The panel switches to **Edit thumbnail**, where you can adjust how the image sits on the frame.

  <Step title="Save and export">
    Save your changes and export the clip.

## Remove Or Replace A Thumbnail

* To remove the thumbnail from this clip, open **Edit thumbnail** and click **Remove thumbnail**. You'll see **Thumbnail removed from this clip.**
* To replace it, remove the current thumbnail, then pick a different image.
* To delete an image from your thumbnail library, click **⋮** on it and choose **Delete asset**.

## Tips

* Use an image with the same aspect ratio as your clip, for example 9:16 for Shorts, Reels, and TikTok, so it isn't cropped.
* Bold text and a clear face usually make the strongest thumbnails.
